Today marks “DONGZHI”, or the winter solstice: the 22nd of 24 solar terms in the Chinese lunar calendar. People who live in the northern hemisphere experience the shortest day and longest night of the year. After today, days will start to get longer again.

Traditionally, The Dongzhi Festival is also a time for the family to get together. In southern China, people get together to eat Tangyuan (balls of glutinous rice), which symbolize reunion. While in northern China, people typically eat dumplings on Dongzhi.
